Something Old – Something New

We’ve had our first taste of winter in southeastern Montana, and it brought back warm memories of the farmhouse I grew up in. No matter how early the first snowflakes arrived, my sister and I would head to the cupboard in Mom’s sewing room where she stored old holiday craft magazines. In those pages lived all our favorites–the cork and pipe-cleaner reindeer; the Santas made from styrofoam balls and colored felt; the fringed green construction paper Christmas trees wrapped around paper towel cores. It might only be September, but we studied the pages–especially the ones in color– for hours. Thinking of the exquisite laciness of snowflakes today, I dug out a box of paper doilies that once belonged to my husband’s great grand-aunt and used them as stencils for this playful watercolor on board. As the season turns, may your holiday daydreams be as cozy as ours were.
